LAJES DAS FLORES PORT

Hydraulics & Maritime works

The passage of Hurricane Lorenzo caused damage to the Commercial Lajes das Flores Port, which conditions its operation.

In a first phase, to guarantee supplies to the Flores and Corvo Islands, it was essential to carry out a series of emergency works that would allow the use of the facilities still with operational capacity. It's them:

  • Emergency Protection, whose objective is to reinforce the initial section of the breakwater to protect the embankment and the access road, as well to guarantee the operability of the quay -5 m (CD) which currently ensures the movement of the necessary goods to the Flores and Corvo Islands while new quays are not built;
  • Jetty (147.2 m long, 20 m wide and depth of -7 m (CD), moorable on both sides) which also includes: the construction of a 22 m wide Ro-Ro ramp; dredging of the bottom next to the old quay adhering to the breakwater, up to elevation -6 m (CD); provisional repair of the access road pavements and the port entrance.

In a second phase, the reconstruction of the port, the following set of works is included, whose project is in progress:

  • Reconstruction of the jetty and its extension by 80 m;
  • Construction of a new quay with 170 m long, depth of -9 m (CD) and platform with 40 m wide;
  • Reconstruction of the Ro-Ro ramp;
  • Construction of the new passenger station building, support for nautical recreation and administrative services;
  • Rehabilitation of general technical networks (water, electricity, street lighting, CCTV, fuels).
